How will Europe deal with technology? Will it shape the future development of technology for the benefit of its citizens and enterprises, or will it watch from the sidelines as others lead? Will it use technology to offer modern and efficient public services and administrations, or will the vast European public sector hold back the competitiveness of the region as a whole?
These were the challenges identified by Fabio Colasanti, director general Information Society, European Commission at Information Society Technologies 2004, the annual technology event hosted by the Commission in The Hague, Netherlands, November 15-17, 2004.
Over the next few days, I will be exploring some of the key technology issues that Europe will need to deal with as it strives to become the most competitive economic bloc in the world.
